This year, instead of the usual (but still fun) trip to the local arcade for your son’s birthday, why not throw a scavenger hunt instead? They’re a lot of fun, and they can be very rewarding.

It’s easy, really. Just invite the kids you were already going to have at the party/arcade/wherever, and see if a few parents want to get involved in the planning; they usually do. Invite these parents over to your house a week or two before the party, and just let the plans unfold. Talk about ideas for riddles and clues, ideas for where to hide things, and suggest other activities for the kids to do.

The first time I threw a scavenger hunt party for my daughter, I surprised her with it. She wanted to go to Action City (the local arcade), but instead I told her we’d have a party at home this year. When the day came, she was a little surprised that a few of the parents showed up, too. See, I hadn’t told her that we were going to also have a big scavenger hunt. The other parents and I passed out the “official scavenger hunt hats” that we made, and the game began! The first clue was given to the birthday girl, of course, but after that, it was a crazy free-for-all. And they loved it.

Be creative with your clues, get the parents involved, and save yourself some money this year by throwing a scavenger hunt birthday party. You’ll be amazed at how much fun the kids – and adults – will have.

O.K., let’s break down the Scavenger Hunt as basic as we can for newcomers to the game.

There are various ways to play these, of course, as there is no “official” game when referring to how we entertain ourselves and our children. But the two forms of play that seem to be the most common are the Scavenger Hunt and the Treasure Hunt – although both are commonly referred to as “scavenger hunts”, so that’s how we’ll categorize them.

I’ll start with the treasure hunt version of the scavenger hunt. This is a game consisting of a succession of clues hidden around the house, outside, or wherever you’ve decided to have the playing area. At the end, the “hunter” finds a treasure. For instance, you may hand the player an index card with the words “I am a noodle head” written on it. Your child may then find the NEXT clue sitting on top of a box of macaroni and cheese. And so on and so on until they find the treasure. Simple enough, right?

The second type of scavenger hunt seems to have a rich tradition in neighborhoods. Basically, the host of the hunt will create a list of common (or not-so-common) household items for kids to find in the neighborhood, hand them the sheet, and let them loose. There are so many variations to this one and a lot of room for creativity. Usually it’s things like a fork, a pop can, or other common items, but one could expand the search to include rare, interesting finds as well.
